Hearts of Lenten Cross

During Lent, household and toiletry items will be collected for the Millstadt Food Pantry. The St. James Christmas collection nearly lasted until the Lenten season and was greatly appreciated. There will be hearts on the cross with suggested items and a barrel in the back of the church for donations. Thank you!

Organizations

CCW

Members provide services for the parish, including funeral luncheons, RCIA receptions, supplying cookies and pies for the diocesan outreach, sew Baptismal gowns, provide quilts for fundraisers and purchase alter supplies and other church items. The meetings are usually held the first Monday of each month.

St. Vincent de Paul

The St. Vincent de Paul Society is a devoted volunteer organization. We assist those in need, fostering faith through compassionate aid. To raise funds for distribution, we organize activities throughout the year. We humbly request parishioners to contribute to SVDP through envelopes in their packet. Our monthly meetings are held on the 4th Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

Quilters

The quilters meet every Tuesday 4:30-9:30 p.m. and Wednesday 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Quilts are made for raffles, fundraisers and parishioners’ quilts for the Summer Festival. All skill levels are welcome.

Liturgy Committee

Volunteers help Father Marvin plan and carry out various liturgical celebrations such as Lent, Advent, Christmas, Easter, and All Souls Day. Meeting are twice a year, one is the spring and one is the fall.

Knights of Colum

The Knights of Columbus is an organization of men who promote charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. They have fundraisers throughout the year for many charities and the needs of the parish and school. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 8:00 p.m. at the Columbus Club.

"J" Team

Volunteers maintain the parish buildings ( i.e. painting, simple repair work, etc.) and the parish grounds ( i.e. plant care, landscaping, etc.) The team meets when scheduled.

Welcome Committee

Volunteers personally meet and welcome new members to the parish and provide them information about St. James Church and the community. Periodic activities are planed for the fellowship among all parishioners.

Scouts

Troop 622 helps prepare boys ages 11-18 to make good ethical and moral choices by instilling the values of the Scout Oath and Law. The troop meets Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. Troop leader training is provided.

Divine Mercy to the Sick

Volunteers, upon request, will visit parishioners who are seriously ill to pray The Divine Mercy Chaplet with them and for them. This is a simple way to support St. James families and provide a powerful spiritual benefit for all. Contact the rectory if interested in volunteering.

Eucharistic Adoration

Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament is exposed in the monstrance from 7-8 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month. The person responsible for Adoration will prepare the alter and lead the rosary before 7:00 p.m. and lead the rosary at 7:30 p.m. Closing of adoration is usually at 8:00 p.m. If interested in being responsible for adoration call the rectory.

PSR

Share your love of Jesus and the Catholic Faith by teaching a group of students in grades Kindergarten-8th Grade. Classes are held every Tuesday 6:20-7:30 p.m. September-April in St. James Catholic School.

Prayer Chain

St. James Church’s Prayer Tree has been providing comfort and hope to worried parishioners since 2001. OCIA

OCIA Volunteers welcome, support and share their personal faith with individuals wishing to learn more about joining the Catholic Church. Meetings last about one hour on Sunday mornings. The volunteers teach as a team of two and follow a leader’s guide. Call the rectory at 618-476-3513 to inquire.

Decor

For special Church seasons, such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter, appropriate decorations are displayed to enhance the celebration of these liturgical seasons. Notification of church decorating is announced in the bulletin.

Adult Choir

St. James provides an opportunity to enhance the holiday liturgies through singing. Choir practice is usually on Thursday evenings. Contact Adrienne LaCroix through the rectory.

Gift Bearers

Individuals or families bring to the altar the offertory gifts of bread and wine as well as the monetary offerings at weekend Masses. According to your choice of Mass time, a schedule is made for a two-month period. The schedule is available in the back of church or online. Contact the rectory at 618-476-3513.

Greeters

Individuals or families welcome parishioners and visitors at the entrance to the church before weekend Masses. According to your choice of Mass time, a schedule is made for a two-month period. The schedule is available in the back of church or online. Contact the rectory at 618-476-3513.

Knights of the Altar Servers

All boys and girls in grades 4-8 in St. James School or PSR are invited to assist the celebrant with the liturgy. Training is provided. Lectors

Individuals proclaim the Word of God and lead the petitions during the weekend Masses. One needs to feel comfortable speaking from the lectern. Liturgical Ministers

Vounteers assist with the distribution of the Eucharist during Mass. There will be a two-month schedule available online or at the back of church. If you are interested in volunteering please contact the rectory at 618-476-3513.

Ushers assist with seating, collecting the monetary offerings and dismissing after mass. According to your choice of Mass time, a schedule is made for a two-month period. The schedule is available in the back of church or online. Contact the rectory at 618-476-3513.

Sacraments

Baptism

Parents seeking to baptize their child at St. James should contact the Pastor to provide basic information about the child. First-time parents are required to participate in sacrament preparation. Adults desiring baptism and membership in the Catholic Church should join the Rite of Initiation for Adults, starting in September and culminating in the Easter Vigil.

First Communion

Children at St. James typically make their First Communion in second grade. They will be prepared through St. James Catholic School or the Parish School of Religion program, which includes learning about and receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Parent meetings are also required. For more information, contact the rectory, school, or PSR director. First Communion is held on the Sunday following Easter.

Confirmation

This Sacrament is usually received in the eighth grade.  Preparation programs are available through the St. James Catholic School and PSR program.  These programs require that students do a certain amount of service hours and make a Confirmation retreat.  The Bishop sets the date for Confirmation which ordinarily is sometime during the Easter Season.

Reconcilliation

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is an integral part of our year-long program at St. James. It is received in the second year, alongside first communion. For more detailed information, please contact us. Confession time for those seeking this Sacrament is every Saturday from 4:15 to 4:40. During Advent and Lent, special Penance Services are available, and additional confession times are listed in the parish bulletin. Confessions can also be scheduled with the Pastor by appointment.

Marriage

Couples wishing to receive the Sacrament of Matrimony at St. James need to contact the rectory at least 6 months before the proposed wedding.  They will be expected to participate in a Pre-Cana program and the PREPARE/ENRICH relationship inventory.

Anointing of the Sick

The Sacrament of the Anointing is available to anyone who is ill or suffering from ailments of aging.  Please contact the rectory if there is a need for the Sacrament.  Each year during October the Sacrament of the Sick is offered after all the Masses on a Sunday that will be specified in the bulletin.
